The visual option for theatre experience today are many. But the essence of theatre viewing is in having a high resolution and large screen. The larger one gets, the lower the resolution is since the source cannot scale upto the resolution of the screen. But from the available options for home viewing in TV, a quality 36 inch or with a little compromise even a 29' would be the cheapest option. As the budget goes up, larger versions of projection TVs or LCD and plasma panels could be chosen. A 32' plasma panel would cost around 2 lacs where as there are theatre grade projection systems available for a lakh and above. Or in terms of affordability a rear projection TV (RPTV) might be a better option where one could get up to 60 inches
TV Resolution - If you look closely at a TV screen, you can see that the picture is not smooth and uniform, but is rather made up of numerous dots. If you step back from the TV, your eye can no longer see the dots, and the picture looks continuous. That is the minimum viewing distance at which you can comfortably sit. The problem is that at that distance, the TV picture is pretty small. It is much smaller than the picture on the screen of a movie theatre from where you normally sit, even if you sit fairly back. This is where large screens and 'resolution' comes in.

TV resolution is usually given in terms of lines instead of dots, since a row of dots forms a line. So donot get confused, remember that the vertical resolution is the number of horizontal lines, and the horizontal resolution is the number of vertical lines.
TVs with resolution of 600-800 are considered very good, but it is hard to make a buying decision based on this number alone. It might be difficult to determine the horizontal resolution of a TV but the resolution of different software and broadcast is fixed. Most TVs will adjust to the varying resolutions of different formats.
As you would expect, HDTVs have the higher horizontal resolutions than non HDTVs, to go with their greater vertical resolution. But HDTV format transmission is yet to be popular in most countries. It is also clear from the above table why DVDs are superior by a factor of 2 than VHS tapes..!
