Having learned on the fundamentals of hifi, let us see the essential components needed to make up a theatre for a perfect theatre experience at home. What it means is that those who have a budget constraint, you could experience reasonably good theatre experience with,
 5.1 channel AV receiver
Speakers (front 2, rear/side 2, and front center.) The 0.1 is a subwoofer to play your lows of a tank firing or a plane crash rattling your windows.
A DVD player
A display device
For those who can afford there are no limits. The above basic components can be substituted by a 6.1 or a 7.1 channel receivers with better specifications. Speakers would also go up in numbers likewise. The power out put of both the above can also scaled up. The receivers should have larger bit rates and better sound quality accepting better and better audio standards. The speakers can go up in purity adding more channels and having 3 way bass reflex and better wood quality with front and rear speakers having tower configurations etc. You could also settle in for one of those low end DVD players or go for multiformat high end DVD players which will give remarkable picture quality. It is not true that since it is digital, it is either '0' or '1' and so the low end will give what ever is recorded properly and the receiver will take care of the rest. The high end DVD players have a marked difference in its build, playback etc.
For those having old records in VHS, you should invest in a VCR as well. But ensure that the receiver has inputs for the analog sources.
Adding to the list could be pure audio components along using the same quality speakers for stereo. Add a cassetter deck and you could use the same AV receivers to play back your pure audio source too. Many of the receivers have a direct switch that will let you play your music without any alteration or equalizing that the systems provide you with. Which means you would listen just the way the sound engineer captured it at the studio.. Home theatre in a Box (HtiB) Concept
Another concept of building a home theatre is to settle for a hometheatre in a box or HtiB as we know it. Not only does the entire system come packaged in a box, it also contains all you need to start up your own home theatre.
Those who can afford or the audiphiles may have big problems with this approach, but it is the convenience and low cost that makes this option attractive. These are definitely not the best quality option, but for those who are constantly on the move, this would be a good option. In such packages it is important to look for the formats supported in the electronics. Look for specifications that would not be too much of a compromise. Probably if you add a reasonably sounding speaker configurations, when you can afford a 5.1 set, it might serve your passion till you settle down in life if you are a bachelor on the move..!
The HtiB sector is likely to popularize the theatre concept like the mini-component systems did to music.
